The final concert in the Spotlight Chamber Music Series 2022 brings together six of Ireland’s most distinguished and dynamic string players for a recital of Baroque and Romantic works.

Their programme opens with a sonata by Georg Philipp Telemann (1861–1767), arranged for two cellos. A Baroque composer ranked among the most successful during his lifetime, Telemann was renowned, in particular, for his skills as a contrapuntalist, a perfect example of which is his extraordinary set of six canonic sonatas. Originally entitled “Six Canons or Sonatas for Two German Flutes or Two Violins”, each movement of these sonatas is a two-part canon in which both musicians play precisely the same line, one bar apart. This short work will be followed by Johannes Brahms’ (1833-1897) second string sextet, a lyrical, expansive and romantic work, which Sir Donald Tovey described as “the most ethereal of Brahms’ larger works”.
