1 – Hawk and Quarry in Winter
Famous Paintings and their Hidden Histories: Autumn 2026
Hawk and Quarry in Winter, in memory of Peter Lanyon by Tony O’Malley
Crawford Gallery Collection Cork
Painted in 1964 by the Irish painter Tony O’Malley, the dark shape of a hawk high above the snow drifts of the quarry is a rich and emotional visual tribute to a friend.
O’Malley attended the art school in St Ives in Cornwall begun by Perter Lanyon between 1955 and 1957 and although Lanyon’s fatal gliding accident took place in August, O’Malley’s observation in winter of a hawk swooping down into a quarry recalled the incident.
It was also appropriate that he would paint his Lanyon picture in terms of place rather than person. Peter Lanyon was an abstract painter, but like O’Malley himself, his sense of place was central to his work.
