The Early Films of Barbet Schroeder

113 mins – France 1975 – Subtitles
Director: Barbet Schroeder
Starring: Gérard Depardieu, Bulle Ogier and André Rouyer

Olivier (Gerard Depardieu), a young and unemployed man from the provinces, arrives in Paris and falls in with a shady character. The two hatch a scheme to rob an apartment they believe to be empty, but it is, in fact, the workplace of a leather clad dominatrix named Ariane (Bulle Ogier). Controversial upon its original release due to its frank depictions of sadomasochism, MAÎTRESSE is, at heart, a love story told with much humour and features fine performances from Depardieu and Ogier.

Please note that MAÎTRESSE features some extreme scenes. Viewer discretion is advised.

The Early Films of Barbet Schroeder

The Swiss-Iranian filmmaker Barbet Schroeder has had a fascinating career in cinema. He began in the French New Wave movement of the 1960s producing work for Eric Rohmer and Jacques Rivette, before directing his own features (both narrative films and documentaries), then embarking on a career in Hollywood (making such films as BARFLY, REVERSAL OF FORTUNE and SINGLE WHITE FEMALE) and then returning to Europe to make a series of documentaries. This season of films at Triskel Arts Centre consists of his first three narrative films, each one fascinating as snapshots of their times and as non-judgemental explorations of their subject matters.

A deftly executed ballet of passion and pain…it is a love story.
