This month at Triskel we have a fantastic line-up of cinema new and old, from Greta Gerwig’s finest films to some great classics celebrating their landmark anniversaries. Scroll through our complete September cinema screenings list below and find something that sparks your interest!
Kicking off our September Cinema, we have Amadeus showing from 31 Aug – 3 Sep. Follow the semi-historical story of the remarkably talented composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his disciplined and determined rival, Antonio Salieri. Salieri struggles to reconcile his professional admiration and jealous hatred for Mozart, and resolves to ruin Mozart’s career as his vengeance against God.
Beat The Lotto is showing concurrently with AMADEUS from 31 Aug – 3 Sep. This documentary film focuses on Cork man Stefan Klincewicz’s master plan to exploit a loophole in the National Lottery system to win millions. Against the backdrop of a struggling economy, the heist became public knowledge, and in a race against time, the lottery did everything they could to try and stop the steal, dividing the nation on a very public caper.
Next up on 6 Sep is the exciting, King Lear-inspired Ran. Hidetora Ichimonji, an ageing warlord, decides to separate out his kingdom among his three sons, Taro, Jiro, and Saburo. Betrayal, distrust, and violence follow, as the Ichimonji family fight fiercely for what they each believe is their fair share of their father’s land. This was director Akira Kurosawa’s final film before his passing and is often considered his best, even by the director himself.
Also showing on 6 Sep is the 100th anniversary screening of Battleship Potemkin. This is a special centenary edition of Sergei Eisenstein’s legendary film based on the famous 1905 mutiny, featuring the celebrated Tenant / Lowe score performed by Pet Shop Boys and Dresdner Sinfoniker.
From 7 Sep – 10 Sep we have the acclaimed new Cork film, Christy. Christy is a young man trying to find his place in the world, and after being kicked out of his foster home, he moves in with his estranged older brother Shane and Shane’s young family. As the brothers look to reconcile their turbulent past, their family and the community around them offer hope for Christy’s future.
Sanatorium will also be showing from 7 Sep – 10 Sep. On the shores of Odesa in Southern Ukraine sits the Kuyalnik Sanatorium, a crumbling Soviet era health facility that’s seen better days. Join us over a summer season where the ever-dwindling guests come for the rejuvenating mud treatments and strange electroshock therapies, in search of love, healing, and happiness. This film is Ireland’s Official Entry into the 2026 Academy Awards®.
Our 14 Sep showing of In Time – Dónal Lunny as part of Sounds from a Safe Harbour will feature not only the beautifully curated first-ever documentary film on Lunny, but also live music and a Q&A with the director, Nuala O’Connor, and musicians Brían Mac Gloinn, and Frank Tate.
Between 15 Sep – 17 Sep we are holding a Greta Gerwig season, consisting of three of this powerhouse director’s acclaimed films; Lady Bird, Little Women, and Barbie respectively.
Culture Night is quick to follow on 19 Sep, and this celebration of culture will have four different events; Tales of Traveller Faith and Beliefs – a storytelling event celebrating the importance of faith, religion, holy wells and traditional cures for Irish Travellers; Creating Connections – Traveller Lives: A VR experience is a 12-minute immersive Virtual Reality experience exploring Cork Traveller traditions; Maitiú Mac Cárthaigh: Sonic Lineages, where visitors are invited to keen, moan or whisper and become part of Artist in Residence Maitiú Mac Cárthaigh’s installation in Triskel Sample Project Space. You’re invited to listen and to join with your own whispers, singing and screaming to create your own keening score/recording; and VIVA VHS! a salute to the king of 1980s home entertainment: the video cassette. This is a mondo gonzo collection of coming attractions from classic and cheesy movies of yesteryear, presented in a tongue-in-cheek manner.
Young Mothers will be screening from Sun 21 Sep – Wed 24 Sep, telling the story of five adolescent mothers living together at a maternal support home in Belgium. This is a true-to-life portrait of the struggles faced by these young women living on or near the margins of society.
Also showing from Sun 21 Sep – Wed 24 Sep is the 50th anniversary screening of Jaws, the classic Steven Spielberg epic. Almost five decades later, JAWS has become inexorable from global film culture, has inspired multiple generations of filmmakers and remains one of the most thrilling, terrifying and unforgettable films of all time.
We are showing a Quatermass Double Feature on 27 Sep, both directed by BAFTA winner Val Guest (THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE, THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN) and starring Oscar nominee Brian Donlevy (DESTINY RIDES AGAIN, THE BIG COMBO) as Professor Bernard Quatermass.
Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk, a deeply moving and powerful film made as a response to the ongoing massacre of Palestinians, will show from Sun 28 Sep – Wed 1 Oct. At the heart of the film is a remarkable collaboration between the director, Sepideh Farsi, and Fatem Hassona, a young woman in Gaza who became the filmmaker’s eyes on the ground. From what Fatem called her “Gaza prison,” she documented life under siege, resisting through her lens while the filmmaker worked to share her voice with the outside world. Over the course of nearly a year, fragments of sound and image passed between them, forming the basis of the film.
Closing out our busy September month we have Little Trouble Girls, the story of 16-year old Lucia who joins her Catholic school’s all-girls choir, showing from Sun 28 Sep – Wed 1 Oct
