Spotlight Chamber Music Series

The second concert in the Spotlight Chamber Music Series 2023 will be given by a quintet of distinguished Dublin-based wind instrumentalists.

Their programme will open with Debussy’s charming Petite Suite, which was written from 1886 to 1889, when the composer was still in his twenties. The first two movements take their titles from works by the French poet Paul Verlaine, who was also a source of inspiration to Gabriel Fauré. Red Clay & Mississippi Delta by Valerie Coleman, a contemporary American composer, will follow. This is a short piece which combines the traditional form of a scherzo with blues influences from the Mississippi Delta region, from whence the composer’s mother’s family hails. Their programme will continue with the Hungarian composer Endre Szervánsky’s first of two wind quintets, written in 1953, before concluding with Ligeti’s Six Bagatelles, which were transcribed by the composer from his famous cycle of eleven short movements for solo piano, Musica ricercata.

Musicians:

Silvija Ščerbavičiūtė – Flute
John Finucane – Clarinet
Sylvain Gnemmi – Oboe
John Leonard – Bassoon
Liam Duffy – Horn

Programme:

Debussy: Petite Suite for Piano Four Hands (arranged for Wind Quintet by Gordon Davies):
