This June, come witness Ireland’s seminal rock band Taste with unseen footage from the trio’s now legendary performance at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970. This heart-stopping extravaganza is directed by Academy Award winning Director Murray Lerner, known for his legendary From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1980, and also the 1967 documentary Festival! which featured highlights from the Newport Folk Festival in 1963 through 1966.
Taste are impossible to look away from in this film; Rory Gallagher and his band mates put on an absolutely unforgettable performance for the Isle of Wight Festival alongside Jimi Hendrix, and The Who. According to Rory’s brother and band manager Donal Gallagher, Murray Lerner had instructed his crew to shoot just two numbers from each of the newer bands like Taste, and to save the main film stock for Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Leonard Cohen and the other headliners; but Taste‘s performance prompted him to change his instructions in the moment, and this gave way to the film we now have the privilege of seeing in Triskel this month.
