Little Pieces of Humanity: The Films of Adrian Lyne

This Autumn season at Triskel is kicked off with the works of the renowned Adrian Lyne. Lyne’s films focus on what he calls “little pieces of humanity”, giving the viewer a profound look into the emotional state of his characters while they navigate relationships, sexuality, and life. With these “little pieces of humanity” Lyne seeks to ground the stories in a relatable form of reality, allowing the films to leave an impression on audiences not just at the time of their release but beyond to the modern era.

Sat 26 Jul FOXES (15A): Director Adrian Lyne made his feature-length debut with this sensitive coming-of-age story. Foxes follows Jeanie, Annie, Madge and Deirdre as the four teenagers spend their last bittersweet summer together before the throes of adulthood, set in the backdrop of the famous Hollywood Hills.

Sat 2 Aug FLASHDANCE (15A): Flashdance tells the story of 18 year old Alex Owens, a welder by day and a dancer by night that has dreams of attending the Pittsburgh Conservatory of Dance. This film, which skyrocketed Adrian Lyne to new heights as a director, follows Alex’s struggle to gain independence, find love, and realise her dream of being a dancer.

Sat 9 Aug 9 1/2 WEEKS (18): This film follows the strong-minded Elizabeth (Kim Basinger), an intelligent and sophisticated woman who becomes entangled in a sensual romantic relationship with a man named John (Mickey Rourke) at the expense of her sanity. Basinger and Rourke have undeniable chemistry together on screen as the film follows their characters’ desire, infatuation and obsession with one another.

Sat 16 Aug FATAL ATTRACTION (18): Fatal Attraction was one of the highest-grossing films of 1987 and a six-time Academy Award nominee, following Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) as he embarks on what he believes to be a one-night-only fling with the mysterious Alex Forrest (Glenn Close). Soon, Dan realises he is out of his depth in his quest for some excitement in his monotonous life.

Sat 23 Aug JACOB’S LADDER (18): Jacob Singer is a Vietnam veteran plagued by violent, bizarre hallucinations. The lines between reality and haunting nightmare begin to blur, and Jacob makes a desperate attempt to unravel what is real and what isn’t, painfully aware that time is running out. Jacob’s Ladder is an immensely effective psychological thriller which is best experienced on the big screen.

Sat 30 Aug INDECENT PROPOSAL (15A): David (Woody Harrelson) is married to the beautiful Diana (Demi Moore) and from the outside it seems they have it all– except money. So, when a rich stranger (Robert Redford) approaches them with a bizarre offer to spend a night with Diana in exchange for one million dollars, it leads to a series of emotional and moral conflicts that soon threatens their relationship.
