From Cult to Classic: ‘90s on Film Season

This summer, Triskel is providing back-to-back cult classics with all of your favourites:

We kick things off on Sat 7 Jun with HEAT, starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. HEAT follows an obsessive Los Angeles detective (Al Pacino) and a brilliant thief (Robert De Niro) whose fates are linked in the aftermath of a high-stakes securities heist.

Next on Sun 8 Jun – Wed 11 Jun we have the wonderfully quirky Australian comedy MURIEL’S WEDDING which introduced the world to Toni Collette. Socially awkward Muriel Heslop (Toni Collette) wants nothing more than to get married, but Muriel has never been on a date thanks to her overbearing father. Muriel begins the arduous task of redesigning her life to match her fantasies.

Following this we have SHOWGIRLS on Mon 16 Jun – Sun Wed 18. Paul Verhoeven’s hyperbolic SHOWGIRLS which was a flop back in 1995 but has since become a hugely popular cult movie. In Las Vegas stardom can be found…at a price. Nomi Malone is willing to pay that price when she drifts into town and becomes an exotic dancer in the seedy back room of the Cheetah Club. Here, she is discovered by Cristal, star of the biggest, brashest and sexist show in Vegas.

Up next is the angry French social drama LA HAINE starring Vincent Cassel on Mon Jun 23 – Wed Jun 25. Mathieu Kassovitz’s sensational second feature as a director changed the cultural landscape of French cinema when it landed at the Cannes Film Festival in 1995, winning the Best Director prize. It went on to become one of the defining films of its generation and a stone cold classic of Nineties cinema. This year marks the film’s 30th anniversary.

We close out the cult classics week on Mon Jun 23 – Wed Jun 25 with Oliver Stone’s acclaimed music biopic THE DOORS, which will be screened as a tribute to its late star Val Kilmer. In 1965, Jim Morrison meets Ray Manzarek in a UCLA film class. Jim writes poems, Ray plays the organ, they decide to try their luck and form a group called the “Doors” with guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Desmore. The rest, as they say, is history. THE DOORS is Oliver Stone’s cinematic telling of the band’s story, with a notable performance from Val Kilmer as front man Jim Morrison.
