Síomha Callanan

Residency

Síomha Callanan’s work is inherently linked to her surroundings and, having lived in Cork City, much of her work to date consists of various projects and explorations of the city centre and its peripheries. For this residency and exhibition she has a specific project in mind. The island on which Cork City centre stands has been an area of interest and intrigue in recent years. She proposes to explore the island in depth, creating a new body of work based entirely on this specific part of the city. Her aim is to walk every street on the island and take photographs of what she encounters.

During the residency, she will use the project space as a base from which to go out into the city and make the work. She will use the project space itself to research and plan her walks, to make notes and document her explorations. She will also use the space to develop these ideas as well as to layout, edit and sequence the images and test out various ways of presenting the work for the culminating exhibition. She intends to experiment with various cameras and film types in the creation of this work – 35mm/120mm and colour reversal film – which will open the possibility of slide projection. TRISKEL SAMPLE Project Space is a fitting venue for this project to come to life, as it celebrates the area around Triskel Arts Centre.

Síomha will invite the public on a group photo walk. Participants will be asked to bring along a camera and through the act of walking she will guide and encourage them to engage with the city by observing and photographing everyday details that often go unnoticed. The aim is to welcome the audience to experience their surroundings in a new way whilst also offering an insight into her artistic methodologies.

Triskel Sample Project Space is a new partnership between Triskel and Sample-Studios that will provide a visual arts project space for artists, especially emerging and mid-career artists, to test ideas and to develop new work that can be seen by the public. This offers tangible career development and audience engagement opportunities to artists on their ‘home turf’ where they have a safe space to develop new ideas, within which risk-taking is possible.
