As part of his residency, artist Joseph Heffernan will be working in the Triskel Sample Project Space on Culture Night making a series of drawings in response to the work he has made during the first half of his residency in the space. Heffernan’s project involves working on sculptural assemblages made using found and handmade objects and on Culture Night he will be producing impromptu drawings responding to these objects and how they interact with each other in the space. This will be an intuitive process designed to open up a space for unforeseen associations within the work and will involve working in a range of materials such as fabric, oil sticks, conte crayons, found paper and household emulsion.Image: Flowers VI, Conte Crayon on Stonehenge Paper, 18 x 13cm, 2023

Showcase of Short Films on Traveller Culture, presented by Cork Traveller Women’s Network

Where: Triskel Christchurch Cinema
Time: 18:30
Duration: 41 minutes

Cork Traveller Women’s Network is a Traveller-led community development project, working for Traveller rights in Cork and this includes promoting Traveller culture and heritage and challenging negative stereotypes of the community.

They have a base at Triskel and have worked strategically together since 2017, as a joint response to the national recognition of Travellers as an indigenous ethnic group. This includes programming Cork Traveller Pride events and bringing Traveller musicians, cinema, visual arts and storytelling to the artistic programming of Triskel.

The partnership supports increasing access to the arts for the Traveller community on multiple levels and also gives a platform to Traveller voices through the arts. CTWN believe that collaboration on this level between an arts organisation and a Traveller community development organisation is unique in Ireland.

For Culture Night, they present a series of short films on Traveller culture.

A Short History of Irish Travellers
Cork Traveller Women’s Network with animator Hazel Hurley / 2020 / 5 minsAn animation written and narrated by Traveller women tells the story of Irish Travellers, as an ethnic group, the recent history, dispelling some of the myths about Traveller origins.
Missling on the Tobar
Cork Traveller Women’s Network with Wombat Media / 2021 / 3 mins
Short film celebrating the network of 24 traditional Traveller nomadic camp sites around Cork city.
Travellers Speak out about Discrimination
Cork Traveller Women’s Network with Hazel Hurley / 2021 / 4 mins

Freedom

If we keep telling these stories we will keep our dream of freedom alive.” (Annemarie Roche)

Tales of the Road
Directed and produced by Noel Twomey (Go Productions) for Cork Community Television with the assistance of the Traveller Visibility Group and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland/ 2014 / 26 mins
