E.1027: EILEEN GRAY AND THE HOUSE BY THE SEA is a documentary film which explores the legacy of modernist architect Eileen Gray, and her house E-1027, on the French Riviera. The name of the house, E-1027, is a code of Eileen Gray and Jean Badovici’s names (‘E’ standing for Eileen, ’10’ standing for Jean, ‘2’ Badovici, ‘7’ Gray), reflecting their relationship as lovers during its construction. Though this house has been through so much fascinating and often grim history– from being used as target practice during World War II to multiple owners’ untimely demise– it is arguably its construction which holds the biggest story of all; the story of Eileen Gray herself.
During her lifetime her success was restricted, and Gray was often overlooked in favour of the accomplishments of her male peers. Now, through the lens of directors Beatrice Minger and Christoph Schaub, we can delve in to the bigger picture of just who Eileen was; a talented designer, a remarkable architect, and a Modernist icon who came up against rampant sexism and erasure to become one of Ireland’s most famous artistic figures.
This docufiction reconstructs the dramatic story of Gray and the house that Le Corbusier shockingly managed to convince the world he had built himself.
