The Raja Quartet are the new kids on the block. Formed only this year and performing for the first time as a group on 7 August, these youngsters are ready to transform the world of classical music during this year’s summer tour of Cork and Kerry. The Quartet comprises three of Ireland’s finest emerging musicians together with acclaimed American violinist Claire Wells. We sat down with Phoebe White and Callum Owens from the quartet this week for a chat about all things music.
How did you begin your journey as a quartet? How did you all meet?
Phoebe: So, we haven’t actually performed together yet as a quartet, but we’ve all known each other for years. We live in Berlin and so does Claire, she’s a really good friend of ours, and we both met Claire at a Masterclass that Martin was attending too, years ago.
Describe your music in three words.
Callum: Spontaneous!
Phoebe: Free, fun and spirited.
Who are some of your biggest influences in your music, or who would you like to perform with more than anyone?
Phoebe: So we actually named our quartet after a drag queen. She’s kind of an inspiration for us; Raja Gemini.
Callum: And I’d love to have had the opportunity to do something with Nina Simone.
Phoebe: Oh, for me it would be Bjork, for sure.
You primarily explore classical music, but are there other genres that interest you?
Phoebe: We like a lot of different genres. I’d say I’m into jazz.
Callum: I think me and Claire are pretty into jazz too.
Phoebe: I’d say we’re all into techno, a little pop and rap.
Do you each have a dream location to perform in, either solo or as part of the quartet?
Phoebe: I got the opportunity to perform in Berghain nightclub recently which was really cool.
Any upcoming performances you’re excited for?
Callum: Well, we’re coming back for a little tour in 2026 in Ireland so we’re excited for that. We haven’t set exact details yet as it’s a bit far out, but we’re making plans.
Any advice for new musicians?
Phoebe: So much! I think a lot of people in classical music only want to play in an orchestra, but I say get out there and try everything. Don’t try to be the best or be perfect, just go out there to have fun.
Callum: Don’t stick to one lane.
Any ridiculous phobias?
Callum: I’ve definitely got some, I’m afraid of everything. Being perceived in public!
Cats or dogs?
Callum: Dogs.
Phoebe: Both, for me. I don’t want to choose.
