This Culture Night 2025 we have a plethora of intriguing, exciting, and fascinating experiences for all to enjoy.
Kicking off our first activity we have Tales of Traveller Faith and Beliefs – a storytelling event, celebrating the importance of faith, religion, holy wells, and traditional cures for Irish Travellers. Organised by Cork Traveller Women’s Network and Storyteller Paddy Doyle. Supported by CCC Arts.
Following this, we have Creating Connections – Traveller Lives: A VR experience. This is a 12-minute VR experience exploring Cork Traveller traditions. Produced by Linda Curtin with Cork Traveller Women’s Network. Commissioned by the Traveller Accommodation Unit, Cork City Council, funded by Dormant Accounts. This venue is not accessible to wheelchair users. Suitable for over 12s only. Viewed through a VR headset sitting in a swivel chair. Viewing not recommended for people with photosensitive conditions or vertigo. Booking: Limited Capacity. Viewing is in half hour slots and will operate on a first-come-first-served basis.
Next up is Maitiú Mac Cárthaigh: Sonic Lineages. Keen, moan and whisper with Triskel Sample Project Space Artist in Residence Maitiú Mac Cárthaigh. What is the voice and how should it sound? Visitors are invited to become part of Maitiú’s installation in TRISKEL SAMPLE Project Space this Culture Night. You’re invited to listen and to join with your own whispers, singing and screaming to create your own keening score/recording. This interactive intervention for Culture Night draws on research from Zeynep Bulut and the words of Ann Carson and is part of Maitiú’s ongoing project questioning what is included in histories, lineage or inheritance – where is the deviant voice and what would it sound like?
Closing out our Culture Night is VIVA VHS! (18+ only). VIVA VHS! is a salute to the king of 1980s home entertainment: the video cassette. This is a mondo gonzo collection of coming attractions from classic and cheesy movies of yesteryear, presented in a tongue-in-cheek manner.
