The National String Quartet Foundation are back with another String Quartet Series. This year, the series begins with the Solas Quartet, featuring a new piece by Katherine Hunka, Pass the Hat, which is a theatrical look at power dynamics within a group.
The second concert in the series is from the Ora Quartet and includes Emma O’Halloran’s Dying is a wild night. A reflection on mortality, it is inspired by events in the composer’s family. It began to take shape in 2017 as part of the West Cork Chamber Music Festival’s Composition Competition and underwent substantial revision before being premiered in its final form at the 2019 Festival.
The final concert brings the Piatti Quartet to the stage where they will perform, amongst others, Dvořák’s famed ‘American’ Quartet that draws on both native American and Slavonic folk music.
