Caligula: The Ultimate Cut
NC

178 minutes – United States / Italy 1979
Principal Photography: Tinto Brass
Starring: Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren, Peter O’Toole and Teresa Ann Savoy

CALIGULA: THE ULTIMATE CUT is one of the most eagerly-awaited cinematic restorations in recent memory. When the original version of the film was released in 1980, it caused much controversy since producer Bob Guccione severely compromised the intentions of writer Gore Vidal and director Tinto Brass by drastically re-editing the film and adding footage which was not part of principal photography. This extensive reconstruction, overseen by Thomas Negovan, is an entirely different edition of the film, using all new takes and angles scanned from the original camera negatives. The results are a revelation: the contentious sexual imagery has been removed, important narrative footage has been restored, and overall the editing is more sympathetic to the performances of Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren, Peter O’Toole, John Gielgud and Teresa Ann Savoy (whose own voice can be heard for the first time in this new edit). This handsomely-produced tale of Emperor Caligula’s descent into depravity, destruction, and madness was made to be experienced on the big screen.

Preceding the film will be a video essay entitled TERESA ANN SAVOY: A RELUCTANT SEX SYMBOL, created by Triskel’s Head of Cinema Chris O’Neill.

There will be a 10-minute intermission during CALIGULA: THE ULTIMATE CUT.

It belongs on the big screen, to a world of cinematic sensation beyond lightweight blockbusters and under-financed independents.
