100 mins – United States 2019 – Subtitles – Dir: Lulu Wang
Starring: Awkwafina, Tzi Ma and Diana Lin

The Farewell is a deeply moving and funny look at inter-generational and cross-cultural tensions, tradition, and complicated families. A semi-autobiographical story – ‘based on an actual lie’ – from director Lulu Wang, the film follows independent Chinese-American woman Billi (Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean’s 8 star Awkwafina) and her family, as they travel to China upon the learning that beloved matriarch/grandmother Nai Nai (Shuzhen Zhao) has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, and only has a short time left to live.

However, due to Chinese cultural values, the family decide to keep Nai Nai in the dark about her prognosis, not wanting to upset her, and decide to host a fake wedding in order to assemble for a chance to say goodbye. As Billi is torn between telling the truth and keeping up with her family’s deception, she must reckon with the many facets of her identity as a Chinese-American woman and her close bond with her grandmother. A story that is both culturally specific and universal, this film is a potent and heart-warming examination of cultural friction, grief, and the love that bonds families together.
