100 mins – United States 1986 – Dir: Tobe Hooper
Starring: Dennis Hopper, Caroline Williams and Jim Siedow
This follow up to the 1974 classic serves up a heady blend of over the top gore, socio-political critique and jet-black humour – whilst Dennis Hopper’s unhinged turn needs to be seen to be believed. On the film’s release in 1974, it was banned in several countries, with the list growing as theaters received complaints about its violence. Since then, it has garnered critical acclaim and is now among the best and most influential horror films in cinema history. One of the many diverse inspirations for the film was a re-telling of the fairytale Hansel and Gretel, according to director Tobe Hooper.
