Palme d’Or-winner and Golden Globe-nominee Shoplifters is a beautifully tender and intricate family drama. This film follows the hand-to-mouth existence of a family living on the outskirts of Tokyo, relying on stealing to get by. Osamu and his son come across a little girl in the freezing cold. At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu’s wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces.

An ode to the complexities of contemporary family life, as well as to the bonds we choose, the suspense in this film builds gradually, leading up to a crescendo of shocking revelations in the final section. Delicately nuanced characters and an understated, yet cleverly crafted storyline make for a refreshingly different take on morality, survival and human connection.
