China’s One Child policy officially ended in 2015. A population control measure that permitted married couples to have only one infant per family (later amended to allow two infants, in the case of a first-born daughter), this law impacted generations of Chinese families. After becoming a mother herself, Chinese-born director Nanfu Wang sought to examine the traumatic legacy of this policy. In this documentary, she interviews relatives, journalists, activists, human traffickers, and more about the reality of living with restrictive reproductive choices. A harrowing but important film, One Child Nation tackles the complicated history of this oft-sensationalised chapter of Chinese history with nuance and empathy.
