The penultimate concert in the series will present two pinnacles of the chamber music repertoire – Beethoven’s so-called “Ghost” Piano Trio and Brahms’ Horn Trio – alongside a work for solo piano, “Comet”, by the featured composer of this year’s Spotlight Series, Sam Perkin. The Piano Trio Op. 70, No. 1 is arguably the most famous trio of Beethoven’s oeuvre, due in no small part to the soaring lyricism and sparkling brilliance of the outer two movements. Composed at the height of Beethoven’s “middle” compositional period in 1808, the “Ghost” Trio is so-called due to the undeniably eerie-sounding slow movement, the themes for which are derived from the composer’s sketches of an opera to Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Composed 57 years later, Brahms’ Horn Trio was the first work for violin, horn and piano, yet is perhaps the centrepiece of the horn chamber music repertoire, inspiring composers such as György Ligeti (Hommage à Brahms, 1982) to write for the same formation. The funereal slow movement is an overt reference to the composer’s grief following his mother’s death earlier that year, the emotional core of this beautiful work.

Spotlight Chamber Music Series

Following the success of its inaugural season last year, the Spotlight Chamber Music Series returns to Triskel Arts Centre this Autumn/Winter, comprised of four Saturday lunchtime concerts in September, October, January and February.

Funded by the Arts Council and supported by Triskel, the series is based on the principle of bringing together some of Ireland’s most distinguished musicians to play with one another in small ensembles. These concerts showcase a wide range of repertoire and a variety of instrumental formations. The featured composer of the Spotlight Chamber Music Series 2018 is Cork native Sam Perkin, whose works will be performed in all four concerts, the first of which will see the world première of his String Trio “Flow”.
