Michael Wollny Trio – Sue Rynhart Trio – Jazz Fest

Double Bill

Michael Wollny Trio

Don’t miss this chance to hear one of the world’s great jazz-driven piano trios: multi-award winning German jazz pianist Michael Wollny has exploded onto the European jazz scene in recent years, thanks to the electrifying spontaneity of his live gigs and a series of highly-acclaimed recordings. From tender, Tom Waits-esque ballads to wild rollercoaster rides, the ideas come thick and fast, each almost tripping over the last.

Like his late ACT stablemate Esbjörn Svensson, Wollny melds jazz, rock, pop and classical music into a thrillingly inventive whole, with excursions into Alban Berg, Edgard Varése, the Twin Peaks soundtrack and the Flaming Lips sitting alongside original compositions penned by the trio.

The current line-up features his long-time collaborator and fellow composer Eric Schaefer on drums, while double bass player Christian Weber was recently singled out by The Wire as being ‘one of the most interesting players on the European electro-acoustic improv scene’. Enjoy!

Sue’s debut album ‘Crossings’ (Songs for Voice & Double Bass) with Dan Bodwell, an American based in Dublin, received critical acclaim from RTÉ Lyric FM, The Irish Times, the respected American website All About Jazz, The Independent, BBC Radio Ulster and The Sunday Times UK.

It was listed in ’10 top Irish acts you should be listening to’ by the Irish Post UK and was nominated ‘Best Jazz Album’ in the Irish Times Ticket Awards 2014.

Her latest album ‘Signals’ is currently setting new standards for contemporary Irish jazz with The Irish Times noting:“Songs that sound at once ancient and modern, with echoes of folk and early music, contemporary jazz and the avant garde, recalling Bjork and a hint of Joni Mitchell.”

Sue has premiered works by composers from the Irish Composers Collective & the Contemporary Music Centre and has performed on BBC Radio with the Choir of Christchurch Cathedral Dublin. She has been featured extensively on Róisín Ingle’s Irish Times podcast ‘Róisín Meets’ and on Bernard Clarke’s award-winning radio programme Nova on RTÉ Lyric FM.
