Nominated for the Academy Award for best foreign language film, Mustang is in turn funny, distressing and redemptive hailing a brand new directorial voice, Deniz Gamze Ergüven. It is the end of the academic year and five sisters play at the beach with their male schoolmates. This act causes a scandal and before long they are imprisoned in their own home and prepared for marriage. The sisters, driven by the same desire for freedom, fight back against the limits imposed on them.
“Gripping…a sweet, sad Turkish delight” The Guardian
