John O'Gallagher Trio Book Tickets
John O’Gallagher – alto sax
Ronan Guilfoyle – bass
Jeff Williams – drums
A debut Irish performance for saxophonist John O’Gallagher, a name to watch among the US jazz cognoscenti, and now getting some well deserved international recognition. Born in California, based in New York since the early 90’s, O’Gallagher has recorded extensively for discerning labels like Clean Feed and Fresh Sounds, and has been a mainstay of big bands for Maria Schneider, Kenny Wheeler and the late Joe Henderson, with whom he won a Grammy.
But it is in the small group that he’s really coming into his own, and his 2013 release The Anton Webern Project heralds the arrival of a compositional force to be reckoned with. The album considers what would have happened if the fearless Austrian composer of the last century had lived in New York today, soaking up the city’s vibe, and comes up with exhilarating possiblities. The improvisation is emancipated, the writing is thoughtful, and the grooves are contemporary in the best sense of the word.
He’s joined during his Dublin and Cork dates this March by the sublime Jeff Williams on drums and leading Irish bassist Ronan Guilfoyle
